Oggi e giovedi, 7 Febbraio, 2013

(I have to admit that I'm writing this on Friday, but I'll explain why.)

Thank you for wishing us luck in Assisi, Dr. Connell, but you are wrong about snow here. After a long day in the city- tour in the rain, a hasty return to the villa, an absolute adventure trying to get to St. Peter's for the Rosary- there was no time to breathe, and less time to pack. We were late to Rosary- some ran inside to join, while Alyson and I watched on the screen in the square.

We could hear the singing from outside the basilica, but almost no one paid attention besides us. You have to wonder if anyone knows what they're looking at; the crowd milling through the square was entirely out of place. The moment I see the statues on the balustrade I get nervous, as if there is something to live up to when you're in the square, and I think there is.

Later that evening we walked through Trastevere, regrouped (with the addition of the Belgian) at the Top Hat, then went for pizza [edit: drinks, we really went out for drinks] before heading back to pack our things. Coming off the bus I sprained my ankle murderously, hobbled into the villa, (I needed a taxi to get up the hill) and fell asleep.

No Assisi for me.
